Choosing a domain for your website
Choosing a domain for your website
The next aspect of having a business online is choosing a domain and getting a website. I know that this might seem daunting if you re new, but really it is not that scary. Your Website gives what you are selling credence and lets people know that you are serious about your business. So in choosing a domain make sure that you remember how important that name will be to your business.
The first thing that you need to be thinking about is choosing a domain. This is the address where your website will be living. The domain name is the thing that comes after the www. in any of the internet addresses that you see. The most well known extension is .com. But there are also: .info, .ws, .org, .net and so forth.
When choosing a domain you need to remember that .com is the most recognizable form of address, and so would behoove you to try and find an address that you can get with a .com extension. It seems that people will remember it easier.
It might be easier to explain it like this. Both you and another are selling junked toys. You have junkedtoys.com and the other has junkedtoys.net. When someone is searching they most likely will type in the junkedtoys.com and go to your site versus the other. Now can you understand how important it may be?
When choosing your domain name make sure it is the same as your website name! This may seem silly to say, but I can’t tell you how important it is. The people that think of your website will think of it by name. If your website is the domain name then they will know exactly where to go. So when people think of junked toys and they type in junkedtoys.com, as the URL they will go to that site. Your site!
You have been dilligent and sat and pondered on choosing a domain name, you have reasearched and tried out many domain names. It took time but now you have choosen a domain name. But how do you know after that long process of choosing a domain name if it is taken and being used? To find that out you can go to any number of places such as: go daddy .com, nameboy.com, dotster.com and register.com to name a few.
If in choosing the domain name you find that it is taken you can always use your own name. (Hopefully that is not taken) If you decide that you want a name that someone else is already using, you can go to a site called, whois.com. It will tell you who owns the domain and you can contact them and ask to buy it.
So the choosing of the domain name is done. Now all you need to do it go register it. To do this you go to a registrar site and put it into the field that asks for what domain you want. It comes back that it is available and will cost from 10-30 dollars for the name. If you pay it you will now have the name for a year and can renew the same name for the same amount annually.
There are many domain registrars out there, some will even have coupons that you can get a discount. If you want to find those simply type in coupons for “registrars name” in Google and it will show you where to go. Now that you have taken the time in choosing a domain that you like, guess what?
You are now an official domain owner!
